Nigeria: The paradox of wealth and unemployment


TO say it is much easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a competent graduate to secure employment in Nigeria is undeniably saying the gospel truth. Despite the arrays of opportunities that abound in the country, it is very disheartening that the nation’s unemployment rate is one of the highest in the world’s labour ranking. There have, of course, been startling media reports about mass number of job applicants in the last one year and the paucity of available jobs often placed on advertisements. 


NEDEP inaugurated to help create 3.5 million jobs across Nigeria



The Federal Government on Monday in Abuja commenced the National Enterprise Development Programme (NEDEP).
The programme is expected to create 3.5 million jobs across the country through the development of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector.
The programme was inaugurated by the Trade and Investment Minister, Mr. Olusegun Aganga. This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja by Mrs Yemi Kolapo, a Senior Special Assistant to Aganga.

Nigeria: Mining - Turkey Company Plans 40,000 Jobs for Nigerians





A Turkish quarry firm investors have said that they have laid out plans to create over 40,000 jobs in Nigeria.
Managing Director of Zeberced Limited, Adil Kurt made this known yesterday when the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Steel, Mr Linus Awute, represented the minister during tour of quarry companies operating in Abuja.

Nigeria negotiates $300m job creation scheme with World Bank


A NIGERIAN delegation to the World Bank Office in Washington DC, USA, Thursday successfully negotiated a $300 million (N47billion)  International Development Agency facility, to support the youth employment initiative of the Federal Government. The fund, which is a concessional credit, is to support the effort of government to “increase access of the poor to youth employment opportunities, social services, and strengthened safety net systems in participating States.”
Specifically, the scheme is expected to strengthened safety net system that would have a common targeting system and unified registry of potential beneficiaries as major elements to facilitate basic services for poor households.
